Root - Platycranus     (Translate)
Diagnosis: Distinguished from other Palearctic orthotyline genera by the following combination of characters:
vertex more or less flat, with transverse keel at base; head wide, in male almost as wide as
pronotum at base; vestiture composed of simple semierect setae intermixed with long, narrow, silvery
scalelike setae; left paramere L-shaped, without serrations or additional processes, with upcurved and
sharp apical process and without sensory lobe; right paramere simple, distinctly smaller than left
one, without processes or serrations, more or less flattened at middle, usually with short and straight, gradually
tapering apex ; aedeagus without sclerotized appendages, with more or less claw-shaped distal
sclerotized portion of ductus seminis; sclerotized rings of dorsal labiate plate with
distinctly protruded and tapering inner distal angle; vestibulum with simple and symmetrical
sclerites encircling vulva; apices of gonapophyses not sagittate, tapering, slightly widened near
apex. Somewhat similar to Melanotrichus Reuter in coloration, body proportions and vestiture,
but clearly differs from it in the wide head with flat vertex, the shape of parameres, aedeagus without sclerotized
processes, and the characteristically attenuated sclerotized rings of dorsal labiate plate (Knyshov & Konstantinov, 2013).
