Otiorhynchus armadillo, an invasive weevil, established in the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

In 2003 Otiorhynchus salicicola (= O. apenninus) was collected for the first time in the Netherlands (Heijerman et al. 1003). The authors predicted the arrival of a next species of Otiorhynchus, viz. O. armadillo. It took a few years, but finally we can report on the establishment of this new species in the Netherlands: O. armadillo is here to stay. We present the first Dutch records and further data on the distribution in the Netherlands, describe how the species can be distinguished from the very similar O. salicicola, and summarize some information on its European distribution and food plants. |
